Destin Memorial Day 2008

We had a fun Memorial Day holiday:
1. Waves all weekend.
2. Humpback whale spotted 1 mile off the beach (so we heard)
3. Surfers getting circled by some sharks in Sandestin (unconfirmed)
4. A 6am wakeup call for me on Sunday to help save a guy that had gotten caught in a rip while taking a morning swim. His friend was screaming on the beach for help and woke up everyone in the whole area. Everyone was just standing around half-asleep and with no equipment on the beach to help. I ran down there with my board but the guy saved himself before I got there. The paramedics took it from there.
5. Mike, Jill, and I caught some waves in the outrigger kayak.
6. Mike and John surfed against each other in the final of an ESA surf contest at the Okaloosa Island Pier. See above.

Thanks for taking these shots. We had a great weekend seeing everyone and getting to surf some decent waves. Hope we get more weekends like this over the summer.
Humpback whale in area was definitely confirmed. They had a big picture of it on the front page of the local paper the next day. Some fisherman got right next to it and snapped a shot with the Destin landscape in the background.

I had to repost Cross' comment above to fix a link in the original post.

Thanks for posting these pics. John and I both had to surf right over a free-surfer or two during our heat...looks like you got the shot of John bunny-hopping off some poor guys head! Great weekend...hope it's the start of a fun summer. M.
