Tallahassee skate park

We ventured out to Tallahassee last weekend and explored the killer skate park they have. Definitely worth the trip. It's free and totally rippable. I would recommend short board only or a relatively small carve board. My longboard is 47". I was scrapping the middle of my board because it was so long. Plus it couldn't turn sharp enough get back down off the vert sections (a kicktail would help). My son's shortboard was perfect for just cruising around and hitting the banks.

Next time you're there definitely take an hour to stop in.

Natalie's first wave - solo

I had a total surfing parent moment yesterday. Natalie caught her first wave at Grayton Beach yesterday. Veronica went out in the surf and pushed her in to several little waves. Natalie surfed her first one all the way to the beach, jumped off the board and ran over to give me the 'shaka bra' hand sign. Then preceded to go back out and catch three more. Pure gold.

East coast forecast

Observations are verifying model forecasts that the polar outbreak has arrived and the coastal low is intensifying off the FLA/GA coast Tuesday, bringing the coldest temperatures so far this fall and building a humongous north swell into Wednesday. Look for the ground swell to linger through Thanksgiving. NWS blended marine discussion backs this up:SCA CONDITIONS CONTINUE THROUGH WED AND INTO AT LEAST EARLY ON THANKSGIVING...MAY NEED TO STAY UP EVEN LONGER DUE TO A LINGERING NELY SWELL. A LONG PERIOD NORTHEASTERLY SWELL IS FORECAST TO ARRIVE IN THE LOCAL ATLANTIC WATERS LATER ON THURSDAY. WITH THE LOW DEVELOPING OFF THE COAST OF THE CAROLINAS...A NORTHEASTLY FETCH IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP TO THE NORTHEAST OF THE LOW AND LATEST WAVE WATCH GUIDANCE CLEARLY INDICATES A LONG PERIOD SWELL FORECAST TO ARRIVE EARLY THURSDAY.

East coast swell

This blog has some pretty good info.

There is also talk of a big swell hitting the east coast this week. The forecasts are all over the place. Anyone up for a midnight run to Jax on Thursday night if there anything left to surf on Friday morning?

The gulf looks like all North winds this week. Bert and I are going to try out the kite board.

My Own Skate Park

Check out my parking deck at work. I finally skated it top to bottom Friday night.

New Jack Johnson Songs

Read the article. I have a copy of this movie. It's pretty good. The movie is being re-released in the theatres and new songs were added for the soundtrack.

The Duke and The Man

Anyone else think that this month's extreme sepia toned Surfer Mag cover shot of Kelly Slater is a nod to Duke Kahanamoku?

El Salvador

Check out this lost chapter from Search From Captain Zero. This guy spent some time surfing in El Salvador while searching for his friend.

You can read the whole screenplay based on the book here. This movie is in production right now, starring Sean Penn.

The book is better.

I just read his new book. It's good but read the others first.

photos are up on Fluid

I posted all the photos from the last two awesome swells we had to Fluid's site. Enjoy! Posted by Picasa

San Diego Trip

I went to San Diego last week for two days. I finished work on Friday at about 1pm and had the afternoon to hang, so I walked from Mission Beach up to La Jolla and the famous Wind and Sea break (seen below). I had some beers with a few guys from the Wind and Sea crew after sunset and got a really good vibe from everyone. It was head high and nice the night I watched it. Tucker and I will be back, with fullsuits and boards in tow.

Mission Beach Surf School

I think this must have been a "surf school" as all these people were sitting in the shore-pound riding foamies. They looked like they were having fun.

What struck me about this trip is people of all skills were surfing everywhere. If you weren't at a named break, you were pretty much getting closed out on, but nobody seemed to mind. Posted by Picasa
