Uno mas, por favor

Sorry, it's late, it's been flat for weeks and I'm freaking jumping up and down wanting some waves. Even little knee high peelers like this one . Posted by Picasa

A frame peak

One more shot. This one just makes you want to doodle, "Insert me here" on the photo with a big arrow pointing just behind that peak. Posted by Picasa

Shots from the same day...

These shots and the video are from right around the old Crystal Beach pier. Posted by Picasa

Dec 23, 2004 - 7:57 a.m. - Shoulda been there.

Just going through some old stuff in Picasa and found this gem. I remember standing there thinking how f'ing cold it is and how cold the water was going to be. It was the kind of day that, after the 3rd duck dive, you had ice-cream headaches bad. I only stayed out for an hour it was so freaking cold. Posted by Picasa

A Work of Art

I picked this oil on canvas up at my local surf shop here for $100. It hangs proudly in front of Tucker's crib. A perfect left hand barrell to inspire him as he grows. Posted by Picasa

THE Encyclopedia

The Encyclopedia of Surfing (paperback edition)
www.mattwarshaw.com

Author's Note

The paperback version is 32 pages longer than the hardcover, and Amazon will probably sell it for about $17, so we’re looking at MAJOR value for money here. Buy one for each room, is what I recommend.

I turned in a final draft for the hardcover Encyclopedia in early 2003, which doesn’t seem that long ago, but when I started writing new entries for the paperback version, I was struck by all the recent changes and developments in the sport. Kirra has been all but paved over by Superbank. The Game has become a West Coast competition phenomenon. Surfing made a mildly embarrassing entry into reality TV with Surf Girls and Boarding House: North Shore, while Riding Giants opened the 2004 Sundance Festival. Sofia Mulanovich and Jamie O’Brien didn’t make the cut for the hardcover -- now she’s world champion and a South America sports-world goddess, and he’s the young firebreathing Pipe Master.

No shortage of new things to write about, in other words, plus I was able to fill in a few holes in the first edition: the late Ronnie Burns was mistakenly overlooked in the hardcover; “Bro,” ”dude,” “surf the net,” and a few other requisite expressions are now included. I’ve put together two other books since the 2003, Zero Break and Surf Movie Tonite!, but returning to the Encyclopedia style – dense, formatted, with a bit of color and swirl here and there – was like getting back on a bicycle. A little wobbly at first, then off and running. Although I really missed not having Nathan and Marcus here to help this time around. Maybe in three or four years, for the fully revamped 2nd edition. Free pretzels again, guys, if you’re up for it.

The Futurist

www.futurist-book.com
This is a great read. It deserves to be posted here because there is a lenghty chapter that takes place in Fiji around Tavarua and has one of the characters surfing Cloudbreak, Restaraunts and other breaks in that area. I read about it in Wired and it is possibly the most up-to-the-minute, modern book I've ever read, as evidenced by having it's own My Space page (on which the main character lists Laird Hamilton as one of his heroes).

"About me:I once fired a man on take your daughter to work day. I once sat in on the drums with Wilco. I once brokered a venture capital deal for a technology I didn't understand between friends I no longer have while playing ultimate frisbee. I once was asked by the New York Times to write an op-ed piece on the death of literacy in America and had my assistant ghostwrite it."

Surf Alert

This is the swell forecast for next Thursday. That's a long range forecast but maybe it will happen. It looks like a small swell.

Surf Costa Charters

"Costa Rica Surf Charters offers day and overnight trips to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Experience the majestic beauty of the Pacific waters of Costa Rica in privacy and comfort aboard the Aquadesiac."

The Aqua what?? Does the picture of the boat in this logo look familiar? It's The Giuseppina's new site. Isn't it deadly bad luck to change the name of a ship? And notice "All Girls Trips." While not much of a sailor, Jeff is definitely a Salty Dog.

Fuel.tv

I've had this channel for about 6 months and it's all I watch. $3 a month for non-stop surfing, skating and snowboarding. I highly recommend it.

The Forgotten Coast

Here is some info on Mexico Beach and Crooked Island Pass.

Also check out http://www.surfmexicobeach.com/ for some great pictures.

Cape San Blas

Check out the Surfline Report for Cape San Blas.

I took a boat out there this weekend. From Surfline: "Heading southeast down the coast from Mexico Beach, you'll find St. Joseph Peninsula and Cape San Blas, which hides a nice pointbreak." Although there was no swell when I was there, this place has definite possibilities.

It's about a 5-mile boat ride from my brother's place in Mexico Beach. Bert has his boat down there in a wet slip.
